Velasquez on Werdum: 'Words don't win fights'
Instead of flapping his gums, Cain Velasquez is looking to let his fists do the talking on Saturday night.
Set to face Fabricio Werdum with the heavyweight title on the line at UFC 188, Velasquez refuses to let the affable Werdum's verbal jabs phase him, and instead plans on letting his actions violently speak for him when the two men are locked in the Octagon together.
"It's the thing of 'In one ear, out the other,'" Velasquez told MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani. "Not let emotions get in the way, it all depends on what happens on Saturday. It's not what people say before. Words don't win fights, fights win fights. And that's what I'm here to do, win on Saturday."
Werdum caused a stir recently when he jokingly claimed to be "more Mexican" than Velasquez, a Mexican-American, since he's spent so much time in the country. Velasquez did not take kindly to Werdum's claims.
"I know what I am. I know where my blood is. I know where my parents come from," Velasquez said. "And that didn't bother me, what he said. What bothered me is the next day he tried to be all buddy-buddy, two-face. I don't respect a person that does that, but, again, I'm happy this Saturday we get to settle it."
