Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Welterweight Joe Riggs was involved in a firearm accident Monday when he was cleaning a pistol and it accidentally went off. Riggs was hospitalized for injuries to his hand and thigh.

The UFC released a statement:

We were made aware that newly-signed UFC competitor Joe Riggs was involved in an unfortunate accident last night. While cleaning his permitted firearm (a pistol), the gun discharged, injuring his hand and upper thigh. Riggs was transported to a nearby hospital in Arizona where he is being treated by physicians. We wish Joe a speedy recovery

Riggs' return - he was scheduled to fight Paulo Thiago on Sept. 13 - will be put on hold while he recovers from his injuries. Sean Spencer has "verbally agreed" to take Riggs' place, according to ESPN.
