Makhachev: McGregor-Chandler has no title implications

UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev doesn't view the planned fight between Conor McGregor and Michael Chandler as a No. 1 contender bout.

"Chandler versus Conor, it's a good fight for MMA fans," Makhachev told MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn. "But both guys, from me, where I am now, we have between us (a) long way. It's just a good fight for the fans, and that's it."

Makhachev is scheduled to defend his belt for the first time against featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284 on Saturday in Perth, Australia.

Without a clear No. 1 contender at 155 pounds, some MMA analysts have suggested the winner between McGregor and Chandler - despite the fact that the fight will likely take place at welterweight - could leapfrog the rest of the lightweight division for a crack at the title.

But Makhachev said after he gets past Volkanovski, matchups with Beneil Dariush or Dustin Poirier would make more sense. However, if the UFC wanted him to face McGregor or Chandler, he wouldn't say no.

"My friends are going to be upset if this happens," Makhachev said of a potential fight with McGregor, who lost to Makhachev's teammate Khabib Nurmagomedov in the biggest fight in UFC history in 2018. "But I told you: If UFC calls me - I never choose someone. If UFC calls me, I'm going to be ready."

While no date has been set for McGregor-Chandler, the two superstars are scheduled to coach "The Ultimate Fighter 31" and will meet in the Octagon later in 2023.
