Paiva hospitalized, out of UFC bout after bad weight cut
UFC fighter Raulian Paiva was hospitalized Thursday after passing out during his weight cut, he confirmed to MMA Fighting's Damon Martin and Guilherme Cruz on Friday.
As a result, Paiva said he's been removed from his flyweight bout against David Dvorak, which was scheduled for the preliminary card of Saturday's UFC Fight Night event in Las Vegas.
"I was cutting weight yesterday and I was fine, I was really fine," Paiva said. "And I remember leaving the sauna to do some towels and then I had a strong headache and pain in the chest, and then I don't remember anything anymore. I only remember waking up at the hospital."
"The doctor said I had low blood pressure and was dehydrated, that's why I was passing out and wouldn't wake back up," he continued. "But thank God I was cleared from the hospital at midnight and am feeling well now."
UFC newcomer Juancamilo Ronderos has stepped in on one day's notice to face Dvorak, the promotion confirmed.
Paiva missed weight for his last fight, coming in three pounds over the flyweight limit ahead of a win over Zhalgas Zhumagulov at UFC 251 last July. He said he doesn't know if the UFC will allow him to continue competing at 125 pounds.
The 25-year-old is riding a two-fight winning streak and is 2-2 in the Octagon overall.
A bantamweight tilt between Rob Font and Cody Garbrandt will headline Saturday's card at the UFC Apex.
