Ronaldo Souza suffered a serious injury in the first submission loss of his professional MMA career Saturday night at UFC 262.

"Jacare" lost to Andre Muniz by first-round armbar and broke his humerus - the bone of the upper arm - due to the hold, his longtime doctor Rickson Moraes told MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz on Sunday.

The veteran will undergo surgery Monday, he confirmed to ESPN's Ariel Helwani.

The fight between Muniz and Souza took place on the event's preliminary card at Toyota Center in Houston.

Once a top UFC middleweight contender, Souza has now lost four straight fights. The 41-year-old Brazilian hasn't won since knocking out Chris Weidman in November 2018.

Souza made his professional debut in 2003 and has stepped into the cage 37 times.

Muniz, 31, improved to 3-0 in the Octagon with Saturday's victory.
