Woodley reflects on Luque loss: 'Shit was going really well until it wasn't'
Former welterweight champion Tyron Woodley believes he got off to a great start in the UFC 260 co-main event this past weekend against Vicente Luque - but it all went downhill from there.
"Shit was going really well until it wasn't," Woodley wrote Sunday in an Instagram post.
The 38-year-old suffered his fourth straight defeat in Saturday's bout against Luque, losing by first-round submission after exchanging big punches with the Brazilian in the opening minutes.
Woodley faced criticism for being hesitant to pull the trigger after his fights against Gilbert Burns and Colby Covington in 2020. The former champ was the most aggressive he's been in a while at UFC 260, but it ultimately led to Luque cracking him on the feet and then tapping him out.
"My camp pushed me in ways I haven't been pushed in a while," Woodley wrote. "I committed and swore to myself I would bring the tiger out that earned me gold. I saw the opportunity for the KO and got too excited. Paid a big cost. I don't regret my aggression, as that's what God created me to do."
Woodley lost the 170-pound title to current champion Kamaru Usman in March 2019. His most recent victory was a second-round submission over Darren Till in September 2018. "The Chosen One" successfully defended his belt four times after winning it in 2016.
The loss to Luque was the final fight on Woodley's current UFC contract, according to MMA Junkie's Mike Bohn. It's unclear whether the promotion plans to re-sign him.
