Covington: Masvidal 'not deserving of anything'

Colby Covington agrees with former opponent Kamaru Usman's claim that Jorge Masvidal is not a top welterweight fighter.

"I definitely agree with that. ... Who's (Masvidal) beat in the top five? He hasn’t beat anybody in the top five," Covington told theScore. "I mean, he got beat by Stephen 'Wondergirl' Thompson. He got beat up by ... old-ass Demian Maia."

Covington added. "He was getting beat up by (155-pound) fighters, some guy named Rodrigo Damm. He got inverted-triangle'd by a Toby Imada - what's a Toby Imada? So the guy is not deserving of anything. The guy has double-digit losses on his record.

"He's a 50-50 fighter in the last couple years. ... The record speaks for itself."

Covington (15-2) and Masvidal (35-13) are teammates with American Top Team and were once close friends, but they've become rivals following some verbal jabs.

"Gamebred" went on an incredible run in 2019, recording three straight stoppage victories and capturing the inaugural "BMF title" at UFC 244 in November. But "Chaos" doesn't see his former training partner as the future of the 170-pound division and believes it's only a matter of time before they square off in the Octagon.

"He hit lighting in a bottle ... and that hype will fade away," Covington said. "And you know who will still be at the top of the mountain? Me. So I ain’t going nowhere. And as far as 'Street Judas' goes, he's going to get his inside the Octagon. We're going to finish this business once and for all."
