3 options for UFC flyweight division after title remains vacant
The UFC flyweight division's worst nightmare happened in the UFC Norfolk main event Saturday night.
Deiveson Figueiredo knocked out Joseph Benavidez in impressive fashion. All good, right? Not exactly. The fight was supposed to be for the vacant belt, but the Brazilian missed weight Friday, so the division is still without a champion.
Here are three options for the UFC flyweight division after Figueiredo's non-title win.
Figueiredo-Benavidez rematch
Figueiredo looked great Saturday, but there will always be an asterisk next to the win because he missed weight. There's no way of knowing if the fight would've played out any differently if he had made weight, but you have to at least consider it as a potential factor.
So, why not run the fight back? Let's find out what happens if both are on weight for the bout. Benavidez would be more than happy to fight for the UFC's 125-pound belt for a fourth time, I'm sure, and Figueiredo wouldn't be able to complain about a rematch, as he's the one who messed this up in the first place.
Flyweight tournament
The UFC hasn't put on a tournament in a long, long time. In fact, one of its most recent ones crowned the inaugural flyweight champion, with Demetrious Johnson edging out Benavidez in the tournament final in 2012.
There aren't many fighters in the title picture - or in the division as a whole - but there are just enough for a four-man tournament that would crown the UFC's third flyweight champion.
The participants should include Figueiredo, Benavidez, the winner of the March 14 bout between Jussier Formiga and Brandon Moreno, and Alexandre Pantoja.
Cejudo gets belt back, defends vs. Figueiredo
Benavidez-Figueiredo was booked after Henry Cejudo vacated the title in December to focus on the bantamweight division, in which he's also the champion.
Cejudo, also known as "Triple C" and the "King of Cringe," would happily take back the flyweight title, which he won against Johnson in 2018. In fact, after Saturday's fight, Cejudo declared himself a two-division champion once again.
If the UFC does reinstate Cejudo as the flyweight champion, the fight that makes the most sense would be Figueiredo. However, it's unclear if the UFC has any interest in promoting another Figueiredo title fight before he proves he can make the 125-pound limit.
