It appears Bellator is being cautious with its upcoming main event.

Jon Fitch will serve as a backup for the welterweight title clash between champion Rory MacDonald and undefeated challenger Neiman Gracie at Bellator 222 on Friday.

MacDonald and Fitch fought to a majority draw in April, with the champion advancing in the grand prix to face Gracie. But MacDonald's post-fight comments about not knowing if he has "that same drive to hurt people anymore" caused many to question his MMA future.

"They asked me to be ready in case Rory didn't show," Fitch told MMANews' Cole Shelton. "Just weigh in and see what happens."

Meanwhile, the promotion said MacDonald and Gracie are in New York and the bout is still scheduled to go ahead. It appears Fitch will act as insurance in case either fighter misses weight.

Douglas Lima awaits the winner of the grand prix semifinal.

Bellator 222 will take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
