Whittaker, Gastelum will be 'TUF 28' coaches; bout to take place by year's end
Ron Chenoy / USA TODAY Sports

The UFC announced Friday that middleweight champion Robert Whittaker and fourth-ranked Kelvin Gastelum will act as the coaches for "The Ultimate Fighter 28."

As previously reported, the two will fight for the 185-pound belt before the end of 2018. No specific dates were announced, but ESPN's Ariel Helwani reports the current plan is for the bout to take place in December.

The long-running television show is believed to be in danger of cancellation, Helwani added, likely in part due to the UFC's new deal with ESPN.

Whittaker is recovering from successful surgery for a broken right hand, which he sustained in a title defense against Yoel Romero. Meanwhile, Gastelum has won his last two fights to push himself into title contention.
