Daniel Cormier defeated Volkan Oezdemir via TKO (punches) in the second round at UFC 220, retaining the UFC light heavyweight championship.

Cormier dominated from the outset with both combatants swinging furiously, looking to knock each other out imminently during the first round. Although Oezdemir fought valiantly, Cormier connected on a punch that cut his eye open, which required attention briefly after the first round ended.

The second round was less competitive, however, as Cormier brought Oezdemir to the ground quickly, securing favorable position while landing a series of punches. Cormier quickly overpowered his overmatched opponent from a mounted crucifix position and the referee stopped the fight, with the defending champion landing punches relentlessly.

Cormier was initially defeated by Jon Jones at UFC 214, but the result was overturned when Jones tested positive for steroids. Consequently, Cormier was reinstated as champion.

"I've proven that I’m worthy of being called a world champion," Cormier exclaimed after the fight.

He was also quick to thank his teammates after the contest.

"Khabib Nurmagomedov gets a title in a couple of months, and by the end of the year, Cain Velasquez is going to be fighting for the UFC heavyweight title again - and he will be the champion!"
