White: Meeting with Mayweather is 'about getting into boxing'

It turns out Floyd Mayweather wasn't serious about donning the 4-ounce gloves after all.

Speaking with TMZ on Thursday, UFC president Dana White said his recent meeting with Mayweather's team was in preparation for his foray into promoting boxing - not because the decorated pugilist is eyeing a move to the cage.

"No, it's about getting into boxing," White said when asked about the nature of his business with Mayweather.

White previously insisted his discussions with Team Mayweather had been quite substantial, and the now-retired boxer subsequently shot down rumors he was eyeing a quick payday as a cagefighter. Even White conceded "Floyd gets killed in MMA" on Thursday. White says he aims to meet with the sweet science's captains of industry over the next few months before trying his luck as a boxing promoter, an endeavor he announced in November.

The 40-year-old Mayweather - an accomplished promoter in his own right - came out of a brief retirement in August to take a boxing match with UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor by 10th-round TKO, then hung up his gloves once more in the immediate aftermath.
