Fighter allowed to compete at Pancrase 290 after scary weigh-in
Daniel Lima lost the battle before he could enter the cage at Pancrase 290.
The Brazilian was handed the short end of a unanimous decision against Daichi Kitakata at the event in Tokyo Sunday, but not before he put himself through a grueling weight cut that left him unable to tip the scales on his own at the previous day's weigh-ins.
A near-lifeless Lima had to be helped to the scale by his team and was surprisingly allowed to compete despite his alarmingly fragile state after missing the strawweight limit by two pounds.
Lima has since told MMA Fighting's Guilherme Cruz he assured Pancrase officials he could make the fight after cutting 16 pounds in two days. The matchup ultimately snapped a seven-fight winning streak and dropped his professional record to 12-6.
The incident comes shortly after UFC lightweight contender Kevin Lee put himself through a near-20-pound cut for his interim lightweight title bout at UFC 216 this past weekend, one that spawned widespread calls for the promotion to implement more weight classes to minimize the damage on fighters' bodies in preparation for their bouts.
