Report: Usman vs. Meek targeted for UFC 219

Don Wright / USA TODAY Sports

Kamaru Usman may take the Octagon again before the year is out.

A welterweight tilt between "The Nigerian Nightmare" and Emil Meek is in the works for Dec. 30 at UFC 219 in Las Vegas, MMA Fighting's Ariel Helwani confirmed Friday following a report from Farah Hannoun.

Usman called out fellow contender Rafael dos Anjos immediately following his first-round knockout of Sergio Moraes at UFC Fight Night 116 last month. The Brazilian then signed on for a fight with Robbie Lawler at UFC on FOX 26, thereby allowing Meek to step up. The 11th-ranked Usman has won all six of his fights in the Octagon.

Meek picked up his fourth straight win with a unanimous decision over Jordan Mein in his promotional debut at UFC 206 last December. He was later booked to face Nordine Taleb at UFC Fight Night 109 in May, but pulled out just over two weeks prior with an injury. All but one of his nine professional victories have come before the final horn.

A main event has not yet been attached to the UFC's final card of 2017.
