Gustafsson finishes Teixeira in 5th after dominant performance

"The Mauler" is ready for another shot at championship gold.

Alexander Gustafsson put on a complete performance Sunday, beating down Glover Teixeira for four rounds before picking up a TKO victory with a series of strikes 1:07 into Round 5 of the light heavyweight main event of UFC Fight Night 109 in Stockholm.

At times, it looked like Teixeira was capable of absorbing every strike in the Mauler's arsenal. It wasn't until Gustafsson landed a series of uppercuts in the final frame that the Brazilian slugger was pushed past the point of no return.

Following the win, Gustafsson brought his girlfriend into the Octagon and made a successful marriage proposal.

The victory means Gustafsson improves to 10-4 in the UFC. Following a September win over Jan Blachowicz, the 30-year-old light heavyweight has now won consecutive fights for the first time since December 2012.

His early strategy involved using his range to smack Teixeira and his speed to turn his back and run when Teixeira got too close. It may not have always been the most visually appealing strategy, but it helped wear Teixeira down and set him up for more serious damage in the later rounds:

Even in defeat, Teixeira showed he's still tough as nails and one of the most difficult outs in all of MMA. The 37-year-old veteran was finished for just the third time in his 32-fight career.
