Browne to fight Werdum at UFC 203

A knee injury to Ben Rothwell has opened the door for Travis Browne to get a long-awaited rematch.

Browne will step into Rothwell's place and take on Fabricio Werdum in the UFC 203 co-main event, the promotion announced Friday.

The first matchup between Browne and Werdum came at UFC on Fox 11 in 2014, where the latter emerged with a unanimous decision win that would tee up his title shot.

Werdum would go on to defeat Mark Hunt by way of a second-round TKO at UFC 180 for the interim heavyweight championship before submitting Cain Velasquez at UFC 188 to earn the undisputed title.

The Brazilian's first opportunity to defend the title was scheduled as a rematch for UFC 198, but Velasquez was forced to pull out with an injury. Stipe Miocic capitalized on the short-notice opportunity and stole the belt with a shocking first-round knockout.

Browne also enters the fight looking to rebound from a first-round defeat, a TKO loss at the hands of Velasquez at UFC 200 in July.

UFC 203, set for Sept. 10, is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Miocic and Alistair Overeem.
