Ferguson says mentor Lesnar is ready to 'start wrecking fools'
Tony Ferguson is about to become the second most famous Team Death Clutch alumnus again.
The 32-year-old lightweight emerged as one of the sport's best at 155 pounds, but he knows that when people think of the now-defunct Death Clutch, they think of that team's founder, the returning Brock Lesnar.
Ferguson is scheduled to face Michael Chiesa at UFC Fight Night 91 on July 13, four days after Lesnar makes his comeback against Mark Hunt at UFC 200.
The two men worked together closely when Ferguson was making his way into the UFC, and from what he's seen from Lesnar in the past he expects the former heavyweight champion to have another successful run.
"I think he needs to hire someone for some jiu-jitsu and some boxing, and he'll start wrecking fools in the heavyweight division again," Ferguson told Dan Shapiro of MMAjunkie. "… I knew he couldn't stay away."
Team Death Clutch disbanded when Lesnar retired in 2011. In addition to Ferguson, the Alexandria, Minn., camp also housed heavyweight notables Pat Barry and Cole Konrad.
Ferguson was invited to train there after being coached by Lesnar on "The Ultimate Fighter 13," a season that Ferguson won. He now fights out of California, but he fondly recalls the singular focus of his training sessions with Lesnar.
"Coach Brock, he's got a different kind of training method," Ferguson said. "It was the most awesome experience to be able to train out there in Alexandria. Nobody around. Handpicked opponents come to practice fighting. Every day was about fighting - fighting, training, resting."
