Wanderlei Silva: 'I could have died' after being hit by car
The way Wanderlei Silva tells it, he's lucky to have survived a recent hit-and-run accident that left him with injuries to his shoulder and knee.
The 39-year-old Silva was apparently struck by a vehicle while riding his bike home from a training session Wednesday. The following day, he updated his status on Instagram.
"I suffered a serious accident, will have to undergo shoulder and left knee surgery," Silva wrote in Portuguese, according to a translation from Guilherme Cruz of MMAFighting. "A man that saw (the accident) said 'you were born again', and the man that hit me didn't stop to help! I'm really upset because I could have died. My helmet is broken, and I don't know what would have happened if I weren't using it."
Silva is signed to compete for Bellator MMA and Japanese promotion Rizin FF. He appeared for Rizin in a tag-team grappling match alongside Kiyoshi Tamura against his rival Kazushi Sakuraba and Hideo Tokoro.
Neither promotion has scheduled Silva for an MMA contest yet and he was noncommittal about when he will fight again.
"I had severe injuries and don't know what’s going to happen, but I believe in God and I know everything has a reason," Silva wrote. "I will do my best and let it be what God wants."
