The Philadelphia Union announced Tuesday the club has acquired English goalkeeper Matt Jones on loan for the 2016 MLS season from Portuguese outfit Belenenses.

"Matt's experience and ability in big games will be a key asset to this goalkeeping group," Union sporting director Earnie Stewart said in a statement. "We will count on him to become an immediate contributor, both in terms of his mentoring ability for our younger keepers, but also for his pure shot-stopping abilities."

Jones, 29, has been in the Portuguese top flight for the last few seasons, having earned promotion with Belenenses in 2012-13. He made 89 appearances with the Portuguese outfit, recording 35 clean sheets in that time.

He joins a Philadelphia Union team that is notorious for its goalkeeping carousel, with Jones being the 18th netminder to sign with the club since its inception in 2008.
