Landon Donovan calls for Klinsmann's dismissal if United States loses to Mexico
If it were up to Landon Donovan, Jurgen Klinsmann's time as United States manager would be over if the country loses to rivals Mexico.
The former U.S. star suggested a loss to Mexico, coupled with a poor run of results, should see the German manager's four-year reign come to an end.
The reasoning for the drastic measure, he says, is similar to a manager's decision process in dropping a player when he fails to live up to expectations.
"Around the world, if a player plays poorly and a player has a bad string of results, they get dropped from the team," Donovan explained to ESPN FC.
"Jurgen said many times he wants our players to feel pressure - so if they lose a game they can't go to the grocery store the next day. If they lose a game, they are getting hammered in the press.
"Well, the same holds true for the coach, and so we had a very poor summer with bad results in the Gold Cup. The last game against Brazil was probably the worst game I've seen them play under Jurgen."
The United States's frustrating summer saw the country drop out of the Gold Cup thanks to a surprising semifinal defeat at the hands of Jamaica, followed by a loss in the third-place match to Panama on penalties.
"The reality is that now, anywhere else in the world, if this coach had those results, and they lose this game against Mexico, they'd be fired.
"I think if Jurgen wants to hold all the players to that standard, then he has to be held to that standard too."
Since the United States saw its World Cup dreams come to an end in July 2014, the country has only won 10 of its last 21 matches in all competitions.
