Toronto FC confirms Jozy Altidore will miss 4-5 weeks with hamstring injury
Toronto FC will be without its leading scorer for upwards of a month.
The club announced Tuesday that the hamstring strain sustained by Jozy Altidore in Saturday's 1-1 draw with New England will sideline the powerful striker for four-to-five weeks.
The American international, 25, left the contest against the Revolution in the 21st minute, immediately reaching for his leg after sliding the ball across the box on a rather innocuous-looking sequence.
Head coach Greg Vanney said after the match that Altidore "looked positive" in the dressing room, though it's clear now that his optimism was, unfortunately, misguided.
Altidore, who leads the club with five goals in his eight MLS matches since coming over from Sunderland in the off-season, was beginning to forge a wonderful understanding with fellow Designated Player Sebastian Giovinco in attack. It was a partnership that looked well on its way to becoming one of the very best in the league.
Should he miss the full five weeks, Altidore will be forced to watch four matches from the sidelines, as TFC is set to play Portland, San Jose, DC United and New York City FC over the next month.
The timeline suggests that he could return to the pitch for the June 26 contest against Montreal, which would also give him time, if the recovery goes according to plan, to be back in time for the Gold Cup in July.
