MLS Game Summary - Vancouver at Chicago
Bridgeview, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Octavio Rivero scored his second goal in as many games to lead Vancouver Whitecaps FC to a 1-0 defeat of the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Saturday, the club's first win of the season.
Rivero produced the lone goal in Vancouver's opening match of the season, which ended in a 3-1 loss to Toronto FC.
It appeared as though the 'Caps would be made to settle for a point from a scoreless stalemate on Saturday, but the Vancouver newcomer struck four minutes from time to seal all three points for the Canadian club.
The best chance of the opening period fell to Vancouver just before halftime when Pedro Morales beat the offside trap to get through on Sean Johnson, but the 'Caps winger curled his right-footed effort just wide of the far post.
Vancouver controlled much of the second half, nearly getting on the board in the 74th minute when Rivero latched on to a through ball but sliced his shot wide of goal.
It was all building toward a late winner, which came in the 86th minute when Steven Beitashour collected a failed clearance from Lovel Palmer and squared a pass to the top of the six-yard box for Rivero to steer past Johnson.
The 'Caps closed out the final minutes with the lead intact to get off the mark and doom the Fire to a second consecutive shutout defeat.
