Dempsey, Bradley, Defoe cost more than 15 MLS teams

Joe Nicholson / USA TODAY Sports

They say money talks, and in MLS, a handful of players are able to talk as loudly as the entire roster of other teams in the league.

The MLS Players Union released the official player salary list for 2014 on Thursday, and the results highlight a handful of players that could finance their opponents with their earnings.

According to ESPNFC, of the 12 players in the league that make at least $1 million, half of them play for either Toronto FC or the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Toronto had a headline-grabbing offseason, scooping midfielder Michael Bradley from Roma and striker Jermain Defoe from Tottenham, each earning more than $6 million in base salary, along with Brazlian striker Gilberto, slated to make $1.2 million.

That all adds up to Toronto having the highest guaranteed team compensation price tag at $16.64 million, nearly $3 million more than the second-highest payroll, that belonging to Los Angeles. Bradley and Defoe alone make nearly double the total payroll of the lowest-spending team in the league, Chivas USA.

Between the two Toronto FC additions and Seattle Sounders striker Clint Dempsey - the highest paid player in the league - the trio make more money in guaranteed salary than 15 of the 19 teams in MLS.
