Unnamed Sporting Kansas City player contracts COVID-19
Miami, July 10, 2020 (AFP) - A player with Sporting Kansas City at Major League Soccer's restart tournament in Florida has tested positive for COVID-19 and has been placed in isolation, the club confirmed Friday.
A team statement said the unidentified player had twice returned positive test results since arriving in Orlando for the "MLS is Back" 24-team tournament.
Kansas City said all other members of the team's delegation had returned negative test results for the coronavirus.
The affected player is now in isolation in a designated area of the team hotel.
Confirmation of the case comes a day after Nashville SC became the second team to be withdrawn from the tournament following a cluster of cases amongst their players.
Nashville were ruled out after nine players tested positive for COVID-19, leaving them unable to train.
FC Dallas were withdrawn from the competition on Monday after 11 members of the franchise tested positive for the virus.
The MLS relaunched its season this week after a four-month shutdown, with teams taking part in a tournament staged entirely within the confines of Disney World campus in Orlando.
Since the decision to restart the league was announced, COVID-19 cases across the United States have skyrocketed, with Florida particularly hard hit.
