Rooney spoke 'broken English' before his arrest for public intoxication

A police report revealed Wayne Rooney spoke with "broken English" before he was apprehended for public intoxication last month outside of Washington.

According to an incident report obtained by Deadspin, an officer with the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police responded to a report of someone accessing a secure door at Dulles International Airport before finding Rooney, who was said to be visibly intoxicated.

"I approached the individual and asked what happened, and in his broken English he stated he went through the door at the bottom of the stairs because he thought it was a lift," the officer wrote. "The subject provided a United Kingdom passport and the individual was identified as Wayne Mark Rooney.

"Mr. Rooney had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage about his person, slurred speech, and was unsteady on his feet, and was not travelling with anyone. Mr. Rooney was placed under arrest for public intoxication."

The 33-year-old D.C. United star was then issued a misdemeanor warrant for the incident, which took place on Dec. 16, and was ordered to be held until sober. Upon his release, he paid a $25 fine plus $91 in costs, according to Tom Lutz of the Guardian.

Rooney's spokesperson claimed earlier this month that the Manchester United legend had become disoriented after mixing sleeping pills with alcohol while on a flight back to the United States following a promotional trip to Saudi Arabia.

D.C. United released a statement shortly after the incident became public, saying that the matter would be handled internally.

Rooney helped D.C. United earn a spot in the playoffs after joining Major League Soccer in July. He has two years remaining on his contract.
