Nguyen fails to report for 1st day of Revs preseason

New England Revolution playmaker Lee Nguyen was a no-show for his team's first day of preseason training Tuesday, lending credence to reports that he's requested a trade.

Prior to Brad Friedel's appointment as head coach earlier this month, sources told MLS Soccer's Sam Stejskal that Nguyen, 31, wanted out of New England.

Although he is under contract with the Revs through 2018, it's looking like this marriage will end in divorce sooner rather than later.

"Lee didn't report to preseason and he's not honoring his contract," general manager Mike Burns told MLS Soccer's Jonathan Sigal. "We'll handle the matter internally, and we've already had discussions with MLS. It'll be handled appropriately. We have zero tolerance for guys who don't honor their contracts."

The Chicago Fire are considered a potential destination for the 2014 MLS MVP finalist, especially after dealing away star attacker David Accam to the Philadelphia Union.

Nguyen isn't the only notable MLS player in the midst of a holdout. Cyle Larin is trying to force through a transfer to Besiktas after traveling to Turkey for a medical. The Canadian striker is currently under contract with Orlando City until 2019.

Perhaps in a preemptive move, New England recruited Ecuadorian midfielder Cristian Penilla on loan from Mexican side Pachuca for the 2018 campaign.
