Landon Donovan, the most decorated player in United States history, won't run for president of the U.S. Soccer Federation, sources told ESPN's Jeff Carlisle.

Donovan scored 57 international goals in 157 caps, tied with Clint Dempsey as the country's all-time leading scorer. The diminutive forward helped the U.S. win four Gold Cups, and was named to three World Cup squads.

It was reported in October that respected figures in American soccer had asked Donovan to contemplate running for the federation presidency in the wake of the men's team failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Sunil Gulati, the current president of the federation, said he doesn't plan to resign from his post and refused to rule out running for re-election, despite the USMNT being forced to watch next summer's World Cup from home.

The current list of candidates includes former U.S. forward Eric Wynalda and NBC broadcaster Kyle Martino, among others.

Donovan last played for the U.S. in 2014 and completed his club career with the LA Galaxy in 2016.
