Toronto FC sets record for most points in a single MLS season

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Toronto FC has officially enjoyed the best single season in MLS history.

The 2017 Supporters' Shield winner clinched a 2-2 draw against Atlanta United to take a point away from home, bringing the Reds' total for the season to 69. That's one more point than the 1998 LA Galaxy, making Greg Vanney's side the highest point-earning team in the league's 22-season history.

Twice, Toronto FC fell behind against the Five Stripes, but it was the Reds' dynamic duo of Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco who saved the day once again. Altidore cancelled out a penalty with a well-worked goal, while the Atomic Ant scored yet another free kick to secure the record-setting point.

Toronto FC now shifts focus to the MLS Cup, seeded first in the East as a result of this historic achievement. As for Vanney and his assistant coaches, Dan Calichman and Robin Fraser, it's all come full circle as the trio were a part of the LA Galaxy team that enjoyed a 68-point tally, a record that stood for nearly two decades.
