New England Revolution sever ties with Jay Heaps

Winslow Townson-USA TODAY Sports

With the New England Revolution set to miss out on the MLS postseason for a second consecutive year, the franchise chose to part ways with head coach Jay Heaps on Tuesday.

It ends a union of six years between Heaps and the Revs, the high of point of which was the 2014 MLS Cup final extra-time defeat to the LA Galaxy. The appearance in that showpiece featured in the middle of three straight playoff outings. The Foxborough outfit also competed in the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final, losing 4-2 to FC Dallas, under Heaps' watch.

As a player, Heaps represented the Revs between 2001 and 2009 as an uncompromising defender, and won the MLS Rookie of the Year award with the Miami Fusion in 1999.

"Jay has done a great deal for the club over the years and had considerable achievements. I have great respect for him and wish him well in the next steps of his career," said general manager Michael Burns.

"This decision has not been taken lightly, however, we need to do better than the results have shown from the last couple of seasons and this season left us convinced we need to go in a different direction."

Assistant coach Tom Soehn will take the reins for the remainder of the 2017 campaign.
