Earthquakes' Matheus Silva emerges from coma after swimming incident
San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva has awoken from a coma just two days after being involved in a near-fatal swimming accident.
The Brazilian was pulled out of Lake Tahoe in Nevada without a pulse after teammates and onlookers heard his cries as he struggled to stay afloat.
Silva, who's on loan with the club's USL affiliate, Reno 1868 FC, was revived after a bystander performed CPR, but was later unresponsive when he arrived at the hospital.
He was eventually transferred to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, N.V., where he regained consciousness Thursday morning, according to the team.
The 20-year-old is said to be responsive and able to speak, the Major League Soccer club said in a statement.
He is expected to undergo a series of outpatient cognitive and physical tests before being released from the Intensive Care Unit. He is scheduled to begin physical therapy on Friday.
"We are incredibly excited and relieved to announce that Mathaus Silva has awoken from his come and is fully responsive," said Fioranelli. "The entire Earthquakes organization is grateful for the invaluable effort by the doctors, players and staff at Reno 1868 FC and bystanders on the beach that contributed to Mathau being alive and well today."
