Howard returns from groin injury after 4-month absence
Welcome back, Tim Howard.
The American shot-stopper will make his long-awaited return from groin surgery as the Colorado Rapids meet the New York Red Bulls, with Howard being named in the starting XI for the first time since suffering his ailment during a World Cup qualifier against Mexico in November.
"I feel good. I feel like I’m close. (This week) marks 16 weeks, so I’m going to close that chapter hopefully. I’m excited to keep pushing forward," Howard told reporters earlier this week of his potential return, via MLS.
"I’ve had a couple injuries that have kept me out for four weeks or so. This is four months, so it’s been the biggest one. I have a good team around me, so that gives me confidence."
Howard, 38, will once again be expected to anchor a Colorado side that relied on a stingy backline to reach the postseason in 2016.
The Rapids, who conceded a league-low 32 goals during the regular season last year, go into Saturday's contest on the back of a 1-0 victory over New England in their season opener last week.
