Daniel Nava has impressed with the bat early this spring, but his defensive gaffe in the outfield Tuesday likely drew the ire of Los Angeles Angels manager Mike Scioscia.
With one out and a runner on first, Nava caught a fly ball, and proceeded to throw it over the outfield fence believing there were already two outs in the inning.
"I obviously skipped a lot of the beginning math classes in California," Nava told reporters following the game. "I didn't learn my counting, but my daughter will teach me tonight to count to 10. Or three."
Seattle Mariners first baseman Stefan Romero advanced to third on the play. However, Scioscia appealed the play at first, and Romero was called out for not tagging up on the initial catch. The unconventional double play would end the inning.
"We've been working on that play a lot this spring," Nava joked.
Nava went 2-for-3 with two RBIs in the game, improving his spring average to .619.
