Report: Rays agree to 1-year deal with Pearce

Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

The Tampa Bay Rays have reportedly agreed to a one-year deal with first baseman Steve Pearce, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.

Tampa is Pearce's third stop in the American League East after spending the past three years with the Baltimore Orioles and part of the 2012 season as a member of the New York Yankees.

Following a career year in 2014 that saw the 32-year-old hit 21 homers and 26 doubles, Pearce struggled last season, slashing .218/.289/.422 with 15 home runs and 69 strikeouts in 92 games.

Pearce will most likely be used in various roles by Rays manager Kevin Cash, seeing time at first base, the corner outfield, and as the team's designated hitter, according to Topkin.

The Rays' lineup was in need of some additional power after losing Asdrubal Cabrera's 15 home runs from a season ago to free agency. Evan Longoria was the only Rays player to hit more than 20 homers last season.

Pearce has enjoyed plenty of success at Tropicana Field, hitting .288/.395/.644 with seven home runs and five doubles in 23 games.
