Matt Holliday left Friday's series opener between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs after being hit in the head by a Dan Haren pitch in the fifth inning.

The seven-time All-Star entered the game as a pinch-hitter and was immediately replaced by Pete Kozma to pinch run. It was just Holliday's second appearance since returning from a six-week stint on the disabled list with a right quadriceps strain.

Holliday has yet to return to the outfield and told reporters prior to the game there are "hurdles to clear" before he is playing again without limits.

The 35-year-old is batting .288/.408/.418 in 64 games this season.
