Rays' 2nd-round pick Chris Betts to undergo Tommy John surgery

What was supposed to be one of the finest moments of Chris Betts' baseball career ended in disappointment Friday evening.

Betts, the 52nd overall pick in the 2015 draft who reportedly signed a $1.485-million deal with the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, will undergo Tommy John surgery after the club discovered a problem in his right elbow during Friday's physical.

Though the Rays scouted him extensively, Betts was rumored to be an injury risk before last month's draft, as the 18-year-old missed time during his senior season for Woodrow Wilson High School due to elbow problems.

"We've scouted him for a couple of years now," Rays scouting director R.J. Harrison remarked shortly after the draft. "We like his bat and power. He's got a plus arm, and there's no reason why he can't catch. Like on any young catcher, there's a question of whether or not he's going to stay behind the plate. ... He has a great work ethic and he's a ballplayer."
