Orioles' Bundy shut down indefinitely, unlikely to pitch again this season

Dylan Bundy's season is in jeopardy after the Baltimore Orioles pitching prospect was shut down Monday with a calcium build up in his right shoulder.

Bundy's injury was revealed after visiting noted surgeon Dr. James Andrews, who said the right-hander is suffering from a rare bout of calcification in the back of his shoulder. The Orioles announced Bundy will be sidelined indefinitely until he no longer experiences soreness in the area.

"It makes it more disappointing that it's a rare case," Bundy told reporters Monday. "So, it's a little scary, because we can't say what happened, how it happened."

The 22-year-old, who hasn't appeared in a game since throwing four innings on May 21, said he hopes to pitch again this season, but admitted the chances look increasingly unlikely.

"It's definitely not fun to go through something like this," he said. "But I'll work to make the best of it and get back to where I should be."

The former first-round pick entered the season as MLB.com's No. 20 ranked prospect, but has logged just 63 1/3 innings since 2012 because of Tommy John surgery. He owns a 3.68 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 22 innings for Double-A Bowie this year.
