Seattle Mariners right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma is taking a second crack at his rehab from a Grade 1 lat strain.

Sidelined since April 25, Iwakuma felt stiffness in his lat on May 12 and was shut down from throwing for the next two weeks.

Manager Lloyd McClendon updated Iwakuma's status Thursday, saying the 34-year-old is ready to get back on the mound.

"The discomfort and inflammation has dissipated to the point where he can get out and continue his rehab," McClendon told Christian Caple of the Tacoma News Tribune.

Health issues have dogged Iwakuma over the past two seasons, as he missed 43 days last season with a strained tendon in his finger and has been limited to three starts in 2015.

Iwakuma, who's set to hit free agency at the end of the season, is 0-1 with a 6.61 ERA in 16 1/3 innings.
