Marlins' Fernandez to begin extended spring training Monday, hopes to return by All-Star break
Finally, some good news out of Miami.
Marlins right-hander Jose Fernandez will report to extended spring training Monday with the hopes of returning by the All-Star break, reports Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports.
Fernandez, who is 12 months removed from Tommy John surgery, has been throwing bullpen sessions and pitching to live hitters over the last couple weeks. He can't return fast enough to stabilize a rotation which has been decimated by injuries. Mat Latos (knee), Henderson Alvarez (shoulder), and Jarred Cosart (vertigo) are all currently on the disabled list for the 18-28 Marlins.
The Cuban will also require a minor-league rehab stint following extended spring training before rejoining the big club.
Fernandez went 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in eight starts in 2014 before suffering the elbow injury.
