Austin Hedges: Expected to be Called Up Monday
Hedges will be called up for Monday's game against the Giants, MLB.com's Corey Brock reports.
Analysis:
The 22-year-old Hedges is the top catching prospect in San Diego's organization. His minor league batting statistics didn't quite reflect that status until this season, but he currently owns a .343/.413/.552 slash line over 75 plate appearances for Triple-A El Paso, with two home runs, eight strikeouts and eight walks. Hedges is still more highly regarded for his work behind the plate, which means he could carve out a lengthy big league career if he can merely hold his own in the batter's box. For now, Hedges will likely serve as the top backup to Derek Norris, who is off to a fantastic start of his own this season. It's possible the Padres will temporarily keep three catchers, but in all likelihood, Wil Nieves is looking at a demotion.
