Cabrera's walkoff single caps 9th-inning comeback as White Sox sink Allen, Indians

Melky Cabrera made his most meaningful contribution to his new team Monday night, delivering a walkoff single with the bases loaded to complete a remarkable ninth-inning comeback and lift the Chicago White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

Stymied for most of the evening by Trevor Bauer, the White Sox appeared destined for a second straight loss when they headed into the bottom of the ninth Monday at U.S. Cellular Field with a 3-0 deficit. When Indians closer Cody Allen was summoned to record the final three outs, though, the White Sox were curiously rejuvenated.

Though Allen struck out the first batter he faced, the 26-year-old quickly imploded, allowing six straight hitters to reach base while his club's three-run lead evaporated. Allen's woes eventually brought Cabrera to the plate with the bases loaded and just one out, and the newly signed 30-year-old didn't falter.

"Today was a huge win for us," said Cabrera, who signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the White Sox this winter.

Allen's shaky outing, his first blown save of the campaign, caused his ERA to balloon to 18.00 through his first five appearances while affording the Indians their second successive loss.
