Brewers' Lucroy expected to miss 4-6 weeks with fractured left toe

The accursed Milwaukee Brewers were dealt another blow Monday when catcher Jonathan Lucroy was lifted from his club's series opener against the Cincinnati Reds shortly after taking a foul tip off his left foot in the sixth inning.

Lucroy remained in the game for his at-bat in the bottom of the sixth, but was replaced behind the plate by Martin Maldonado in the top of the seventh inning. The 28-year-old was shortly thereafter diagnosed with a fractured left toe, and is expected to be placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.

The Brewers will recall catcher Juan Centeno from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Lucroy's place on the active roster. Lucroy's injury punctuates an altogether disastrous start to the season for the All-Star, who entered Monday's game with a meager .167 batting average in 11 contests.

Manager Ron Roenicke estimated Tuesday that four-to-six weeks is a reasonable timetable for Lucroy's return, according to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

Injuries have plagued the Brewers throughout the early stages of the campaign, as Carlos Gomez landed on the disabled list last week with a hamstring strain while Scooter Gennett received stitches in his left hand following an accident in the shower Sunday.
