Brewers' Gomez lands on DL with hamstring strain

The Milwaukee Brewers' outfield depth will be tested after the club received some bad news regarding Carlos Gomez's MRI.

Tests revealed a small tear in Gomez's hamstring, which forced the club to place the All-Star center fielder on the 15-day disabled list Friday, retroactive to April 16. Gomez received a cortisone shot to aid in his recovery, but there's no timetable for his return.

He'll be re-evaluated next week for what the club is officially calling a right hamstring strain, but manager Ron Roenicke believes Gomez will miss up to three weeks of action.

Gomez injured the hamstring while running the bases late in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals.

"When you talk about a leadoff guy who can do what he can do, and in center field, it's concerning," Roenicke told reporters. "We know offensively we need to get things going and we're losing a guy who has a chance to do a ton for you."

Milwaukee recalled Jason Rogers from Triple-A Colorado to take Gomez's place on the active roster. Rogers hit .360/.429/.640 with two homers in six games with Colorado.

Gerardo Parra filled in for Gomez at center on Thursday and should continue to hold down the spot for the foreseeable future.

Gomez, who missed 14 games in 2012 with a similar injury, is hitting .235 with a home run and six RBIs in eight contests.
