Johan Santana will resume his throwing program this week after his bothersome left shoulder forced him to miss the championship series of the Venezuelan Winter League playoffs.
Determined to revive his MLB career after missing the last two seasons due to injury, Santana intends to sign within the next few weeks, according to ESPN's Darren Wolfson. Santana's comeback attempt in 2014 was thwarted in June after the 35-year-old tore his Achilles during an extended spring training game.
The two-time Cy Young award winner also missed the entire 2013 season as he recovered from shoulder surgery, but still drew interest earlier this offseason from the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays.
It's highly unlikely, however, that any team would offer a guaranteed contract to Santana, who owns a 3.20 ERA (136 ERA+) with a 3.51 strikeout-to-walk ratio over parts of 12 seasons in the majors.
