Rays promote Tom Foley to bench coach
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Tom Foley has been promoted to bench coach for the Tampa Bay Rays, who have also added Rocco Baldelli and Charlie Montoyo to the staff of first-year manager Kevin Cash.
The team said Friday that former first base coach George Hendrick accepted a job as special advisor to baseball operations.
Foley was third base coach on the staff of former manager Joe Maddon, who left to manage the Chicago Cubs.
Returning coaches include Jim Hickey (pitching), Derek Shelton (hitting), Stan Boroski (bullpen) and Jamie Nelson (major league).
Baldelli, a former Rays player who spent the past four seasons as a special assistant in baseball operations, will be the first base coach. Montoyo, who managed Triple-A Durham the last eight years, replaces Foley as third-base coach.
