Houston Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow confirmed Wednesday on Twitter that top prospect Carlos Correa should be ready for spring training after undergoing season-ending surgery in June to repair a fractured fibula.
Selected first overall in the 2012 draft, Correa emerged as one of the most compelling talents in the minor leagues last season after hitting .325/.416/.510 with 28 extra-base hits and 20 stolen bases in 62 games with High-A Lancaster. Correa, however, injured his right ankle sliding into third base during a game June 21, precipitating season-ending surgery for the 20-year-old shortstop.
Correa, who was recently lauded by Baseball Prospectus as the game's second-best prospect, has already started running and taking ground balls and should be fully recovered when spring training opens.
