Jeter to play 1st career home game with Yankees eliminated from playoffs

Anthony Gruppuso-USA TODAY Sports

There's a first time for everything.

Providing Mother Nature cooperates, which is no guarantee, Derek Jeter is set to play his final game at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. Jeter's farewell to the Bronx faithful will mark the first time in his 20-year career that he's played a home game with his New York Yankees eliminated from the postseason.

Jeter has played 1,390 career regular-season home games, and in every one of them the Yankees have either been mathematically alive for a playoff spot or already clinched a postseason berth.

New York was eliminated Wednesday after losing 9-5 to the American League East-winning Baltimore Orioles.
