Reds spoil Cubs' Arrieta's no-hit bid for 2nd time this season
Chicago Cubs right-hander Jake Arrieta's quest for his first no-hitter was once again spoiled by the Cincinnati Reds.
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips broke up the no-hitter in the eighth inning on Tuesday with a one-out double; it's the second time in less than three months that Cincinnati has spoiled one of Arrieta's near-perfect outings.
On June 24, Reds outfielder Billy Hamilton ended Arrieta's first potential no-hitter with a lead-off single in the seventh inning. His following start, Arrieta was four outs away from no-hitting the Boston Red Sox before Stephen Drew hit an eighth inning single.
The 28-year-old regrouped after the Phillips single on Tuesday and went on to throw a complete game shutout, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out a career-high 13 batters.
