After avoiding elbow surgery, Detroit Tigers right-hander Luke Putkonen will begin a rehab assignment Thursday.

Putkonen, who was placed on the disabled list in April, appeared in two games for the Tigers this season, sporting an astronomical 27 ERA over 2 2/3 innings.
