Yankees acquire Brandon McCarthy from Diamondbacks
The New York Yankees bolstered their beleaguered rotation on Sunday, acquiring right-hander Brandon McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
New York's starting corps has been ravaged by injuries this season, as right-hander Ivan Nova underwent Tommy John surgery during the nascent stages of the campaign and veteran left-hander CC Sabathia seems unlikely to return this year amid unrelenting knee problems.
McCarthy managed a 5.01 ERA across 18 starts for the Diamondbacks this season, but fashioned an impressive 4.65 strikeout-to-walk ratio while allowing 15 home runs over 109 2/3 innings. A bloated 20 percent home run to fly ball rate (HR/FB) inflated McCarthy's earned run average in Arizona, and belied the 30-year-old's solid 3.79 fielding independent pitching (FIP).
UPDATE: 11:36 AM
The Yankees have officially confirmed that left-hander Vidal Nuno will head to Arizona to complete the deal. The 26-year-old crafted a 5.42 ERA over 14 starts and three relief appearances for the Yankees in 2014, allowing 15 home runs in 78 innings.
