Cubs designate Veras for assignment, place Castillo on DL

The Chicago Cubs made a pair of organizational moves on Tuesday, designating reliever Jose Veras for assignment and placing catcher Welington Castillo on the disabled list.
The 33-year-old Veras was removed from the 40-man roster after appearing in 12 games for the Cubs while posting a 8.10 ERA. He's bounced around with eight teams in his nine years of major league service time, and his spot on the roster will go to veteran Eli Whiteside.
Whiteside, a 34-year-old catcher, will replace Castillo on the 25-man roster as well. The 27-year-old Castillo has been diagnosed with ribcage inflammation, and will head to the disabled list.
Reliever Hector Rondon has been activated from the paternity list and will take Veras' spot in the bullpen.
